I saw a certified E60 M5 for $28k on cars.com yesterday. It's gone now. How/why the hell did they certify it? The owner must feel on top of the world.

Because M vehicles are known quite well for their finicky nature. If they traded right, they still made their money on it.

Nice. Get that down another $10k on average and it'll be affordable when shit inevitably breaks .

Pulled up next to a guy in a Phaeton in traffic the other day. Sun was shining, despite the crisp air, so we both had our windows down. Asked how he liked it, having driven one myself, and he tells me it's his second. W8 or W12, I asked. He says W8 in a strange sort of way. Then says that they're the most affordable luxury car on the market... right up until something breaks; like the fan belt that broke on his W12 and required the entire front end to come off to repair.

I love the idea of this beauties coming down in price but the thing is, they aren't really getting that much cheaper.

I freaked out! I was very confused/surprised. It was an '06, fairly good looking condition. I still have no idea how they could certify that thing. I'd buy it in a heartbeat with that coverage.

I took the work VW Transporter to get serviced the other day, a guy was in getting his Touareg R50 repaired. One of his injectors was fouled and he was quoted $ 12k to replace all 10 of the injectors.

I screamed internally and clenched my bunghole, he didn't bat an eye lid and got his credit card out.

HAHA!!

This, this right here is where I, as a North American, laugh at the only-Euro or only-Jap owning crowd. Look, I'll say, I'll admit that your high tolerance, high quality import feels pretty quality over my American car. But when I need a fan belt replaced, it's $120 done in the shop... not $1200.

There are some advantages to buying within your market.

Stop teasing me. I've been keeping track of the used value of E60/E63 M cars since they came out. They are truly insanely cheap now. If its had the SMG work (which it likely has, since they all needed it), there's really not much to worry about. They do burn oil, go through tires, and get terrible mileage. If you're driving one, you probably couldn't give less of a shit.

You're going to hate yourself for buying the SMG.

Jap parts are cheap in Australia thankfully, my old Toyota Corona threw the original timing belt at 350kkm's and it cost me $16 to replace the belt and idler. I saved the money for a tow by doing it on the roadside where it broke

I should probably add the caveat that yes, the same is true here; import parts aren't always expensive and labor isn't always expensive, especially if you're buying an entry level vehicle. It's when you get up into the performance brackets that you start to talk about more expense versus the local product.

"There are some advantages to buying within your market."

This. This. This.

Rarely do I see many Opponauts complain about their vehicles repair costs, but it happens all the time to some folks that buy out of their means just because they afford the Jaguar, Audi, etc. of their dreams. It upsets me that these people do not take into consider the upkeep of these vehicles.

Though the fella who willingly paid the $12k to get his R50 service made you cringe (I would too), it's the attitude and financial stability you need to maintain these vehicles. Our family just got rid of our beloved CTS because even that was getting too expensive for us.

yeah that's true I suppose. I wish my MR2 was only twice as much as the old Corona was to keep running.

My Subarus don't cost hardly anything to keep running

On the other hand, my parents have had 3 German cars and they all have been nightmares

So does your skin itch when you get the jones for another car?

Are you worried about withdrawals when you only have two awesome cars in the garage?

It is, Michigan. I was just using our car as perspective. The CTS was cheap to fix, but it added up. That's all I was trying to say, haha.

Oh okay I was confused! Ah, damn not even CTS-V? How much do you think you guys put in?

Not a CTS-V, boy, I wish! Hmm, well, please take into consideration that I'm an incredibly cheap individual and find sums of money over $30 to be expensive, haha. I'd have to say we dumped close to $7500 before we sold it. This was only a span of 3 years.

In these years we had a shock failure and the diff leak, among other minor things and regular service. Though where it was getting the most pricey was the little accidents: my brother drove into one of the gutters of our house, his roommates stained and destroyed the interior and carpets with god-knows-what, and my dad accidentally backed into the fence.

I still heavily recommend the CTS, ours was a first generation. It was comfortable as well as stunning, I miss it.

Seen a few around for about 30k...usually around 100k miles but they are right there. Or find a 550 sport for about 20

Maintaining that engine is a black hole for your income. Needs new rod bearings at 80k miles...

$7500 in 3 years is extremely expensive. My limit would $2k a year for maintenance and repairs for any vehicle.

I know I have the jones for another car when I start obsessing about it and reading every detail I can find about it. That's when I know I'm in trouble!

Must not read. Must not buy. Much costs. Total insanity

It's great when you can leverage that to find the wife (or yourself) a really nice car for relatively little money, and she's the ooo-ahh of all her friends. Makes points.
